"The trial is complex, the discovery is voluminous, and Mr. Henley is facing a possible sentence of life imprisonment." That was the pitch from Eugene "Big U" Henley's new lawyers in a Los Angeles federal courtroom Wednesday (Nov. 4), and it was enough to push his RICO trial back, just not as far as they wanted, per Complex and HotNewHipHop.

Judge Fernando Aenlle-Rocha heard the defense ask to move the start date from Feb. 16, 2027 all the way to Oct. 19, 2027. Prosecutors fought the request in open court. Instead of granting either side the full win, the judge amended the calendar to April 27, 2027, splitting the difference between the original date and the October ask.

New lawyers, a mountain of discovery

Henley's current counsel joined the case in late September. Since then they say they have been staring down a discovery dump that includes 42 batches, more than 1.1 million pages, 29,612 audio and video files, and roughly 219 gigabytes of material. That volume, plus a potential life sentence if he is convicted, is the core of their delay argument, according to filings covered by Complex and HotNewHipHop.

The government did not buy the need for eight extra months. Prosecutors told the court that every postponement raises the risk to people who may testify, and they pointed to one witness whose home was reportedly spray-painted with the word "rat." The indictment also includes an alleged murder-for-hire plot aimed at a witness, which the feds have cited as a reason not to stretch the timeline any further than necessary.

What Big U is accused of

Henley, 59, is a former manager of Nipsey Hussle and one of seven defendants named in a sprawling federal RICO case out of Los Angeles. Prosecutors allege a "mafia-like" check-in and protection racket that targeted athletes and musicians in the city, along with charges that touch alleged extortion, kidnapping, fraud, embezzlement, prostitution and murder. Those remain accusations. Henley has not been convicted on any of them, and he is still in custody awaiting trial.

Six co-defendants are tied to the same case. The government's theory, as described in charging papers and subsequent coverage, frames the alleged enterprise as a street-level protection and money scheme that reached into entertainment and sports circles in L.A. Defense filings have stressed the scale of the discovery and the stakes of a life term rather than conceding the government's narrative.

April, not October

Wednesday's hearing did not resolve the underlying indictment. It only reset the clock. The defense wanted October 2027 so new counsel could finish digesting the file. Prosecutors wanted to hold closer to February, arguing that delay itself becomes a weapon against witnesses. April 27, 2027 is where Judge Aenlle-Rocha landed, and that is now the date Big U's RICO trial is scheduled to start unless the court moves it again.
