2 Chainz Tells Keith Lee Celebrities Earned Their Perks, and the Internet Is Split

On Den of Kings, the Atlanta rapper and the food critic went back and forth over whether famous people should get the VIP treatment at restaurants.

2 Chainz and Keith Lee sat down at the same table, and the conversation turned into one of the most talked-about restaurant debates of the year.

The two were guests on Kirk Franklin's Den of Kings alongside comedians Desi Banks and Mojo Brookzz, according to The Root. At one point, Chainz brought up the fact that Lee had reviewed his spots. Complex reports that he name-checked Lee's take on Esco Restaurant & Tapas, one of his Atlanta restaurants, while insisting it was not getting under his skin. "I saw you do my restaurant. I saw you do other people's restaurants," he said. "And I really can't judge it because it's your opinion."

Keith Lee explains the mother-in-law test

Lee laid out why his reviews look the way they do. In his view, a famous face walking into a restaurant is going to get a completely different night than an everyday customer. He said he once sent his mother-in-law into 10 restaurants and she could not get served anywhere, but when he showed up himself, the table was suddenly ready.

His point was about the people who follow him. Fans drive long distances and spend real money on his recommendations, and he said he never wants anybody to get a worse experience just because they are not Keith Lee.

Chainz: "I done worked my ass off"

That is where Chainz pushed back. "I'm an entertainer, and obviously, we get perks that other people don't get," he said in the clip HotNewHipHop shared on X. "I don't stand in line at the airport. I don't do none of that because I done worked my ass off to do this here." Per The Root, he added that standing in line for 45 minutes to get something was not happening.

He also wondered out loud whether Lee's years as a pro MMA fighter, with all the strict dieting and weight cuts, shape what he expects from a plate. Lee answered that his athletic career is what got him into nutrition and cooking in the first place, and that restaurants that invite him in should be ready for an honest opinion, Complex reports.

Who won?

Both men kept it respectful on camera, but timelines picked sides fast. A lot of viewers backed Lee's argument that the food and service should be the same for everybody, while others agreed with Chainz that fame comes with perks. As EURweb put it, the two positions are not necessarily at odds: a restaurant can roll out the red carpet for a star and still treat the paying public right.
